Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc) is a song by the British synth-pop band Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark ("OMD" for short) from 1982. It was the third single release after Souvenir and Joan of Arc the studio album Architecture & Morality . To avoid confusion with the single Joan of Arc , OMD chose the title Maid of Orleans . It is the band's most successful single to date in German-speaking countries. It took first place in the German annual charts in 1982.

The text was written by Andy McCluskey and is about the French national heroine Jeanne d'Arc . The song was originally written on the 550th anniversary of Joan of Arc's death, May 30, 1981. The distinctive melody is played with a Mellotron and its sound is reminiscent of a bagpipe . The piece is underlaid with a waltz-like 6/8 time. The approximately one-minute intro consists of electronic sounds that were added later. The publication took place on January 15, 1982.

Chart placements

In Germany, Maid of Orleans was in the singles charts for 43 weeks , four of them at number one . So the song became the most successful single of the year. OMD also took first place in the annual charts of the youth magazine BRAVO selected by readers . In Switzerland, they achieved 15th place in the annual hit parade.

Mainly the melody was covered by Maid of Orleans . Well-known interpreters include Drafi Deutscher , Gregorian , Watergate and Voi feat. DJ Frost & Talla 2XLC .

Video

The exterior shots of the original Maid of Orleans video with actress Julia Tobin were filmed at Brimham Rocks in Nidderdale and in the ruins of Fountains Abbey . Directed by Steve Barron , who later became one of the greatest music clip directors.
