Architecture & Morality is the third studio album by the British pop band Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark . It was released in November 1981.
The title of the album was of Martha Ladly ( Martha and the Muffins proposed) and refers to the book Morality and Architecture ( " Moral and Architecture ") by the historian David Watkin .
Three singles were extracted from Architecture & Morality , which were able to place themselves successfully in various music charts . The album is considered the band's greatest success, both commercially and among critics. More than three million copies had been sold by 2009.
The album and its singles
From Architecture & Morality the domestic market of the band, three singles were in the UK, coupled, all high in the three UK Top 40 : able to place Souvenir ranked No. 3. Joan of Arc , ranked No. 5 and. Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc) at number 4. The singles were also very successful in other international charts. Thus achieved Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc) , a no. 1 in Germany .
Musically, the album is notable, among other things, for its extensive use of the Mellotron , a mechanical tape playback device generally more associated with progressive rock of the early 1970s than with synthpop of the 1980s.
The record cover was designed by Peter Saville and Brett Wickens . While the first publication of Architecture & Morality was held in a light yellow-orange (with a machine-punched inner cover), various re-publications appeared in blue, yellow, gray or green.
The tenth to sixteenth title of remastered reissues were B-sides of three singles and the piece Gravity Never Failed , which was originally planned as a separate single, but as outtake only in 1988 as a B-side to the single Dreaming from the album The Best of OMD published has been.
Remixes of The Romance Of The Telescope and Of All The Things We've Made appeared on the follow-up album Dazzle Ships , released in 1983 .
All songs on the album were part of the set list of the concert, the OMD on their comeback - tour played of 2007.
