Tilmann Dehnhard

Tilmann Dehnhard (* 1968 in Darmstadt ) is a German jazz saxophonist and flutist.

Life

Tilmann Dehnhard is the son of the architect and watercolorist Martin Dehnhard . He had piano and guitar lessons in his childhood and later studied flute and saxophone at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1989 to 1994 and film music composition at the Babelsberg University of Film and Television from 2004 to 2008. At the end of the 1980s, he won several prizes in the competitions for students composing and youth making music .

In 1991 Dehnhard founded the band jazz indeed , with which he was a prize winner in the studio competition of the Berlin Senate in 1994 and recorded the album under water in 1996 . In 1992 he took part in concerts and radio recordings of Alexander von Schlippenbach's Young Improviser's Pool and Jerry Granelli's The Globe Band . After graduating, he received a scholarship from the Senate and took lessons with John Ruocco in The Hague and David Liebman in the USA.

In 1998 Dehnhard founded the Tilmann-Dehnhard Quartet (with Kai Brückner , guitar, Paul Kleber , double bass, Sebastian Merck , drums, from 2002 quintet) and the duo Til & Nic with the pianist Nicolai Thärichen . In the same year he composed the septet Loops, Lilts & Lullabies for the Flautando Ensemble Berliner Flutisten . In 1999 he composed eleven songs for actress Ruth Brauer based on texts by Mascha Kaléko .

From 1999 to 2000 he taught at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá.

Since the late 1980s Dehnhard has been involved in numerous film and drama music. In 2001 he played the music for an installation by Gabriela Salamanca in the Berlin gallery Kunstffekt . In 2002 he took part in the project in the hands of time , a space and sound performance for 12 musicians in the Martin-Gropius-Bau .

In 2005 Tilmann Dehnhard went on a concert tour through West Bengal with Tanmoy Bose and the group Taal Tantra . In 2006 he again gave workshops for saxophone, jazz theory and ensemble work at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá.

He teaches flute and orchestration and film music at the Berlin Academy of Popular Arts at the Berlin Jazz Institute.
