Barbara Buchholz (born December 8, 1959 in Duisburg , † April 10, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German bassist , live electronics technician and composer . The musician, who last lived in Berlin, was one of the world-renowned theremin players.

Career

Barbara Buchholz studied flute, guitar, bass and singing at Bielefeld University . Since the early 1980s she has worked as a performer and composer in interdisciplinary projects and in the field of theater music. She made a name for herself as a bassist in the German women's jazz orchestra Reichlich Feminine . She produced Tap It Deep - “midified” tap dance and music , as well as Human Interactivity and Theremin: Berlin-Moscow .

In the late 1990s she met Lydia Kavina , the great niece of the theremin inventor Lev Termen , and learned to play the theremin from her in Moscow. Buchholz used the theremin as a full-fledged instrument within jazz , improvised music and new music . In a contemporary context, she developed new sound possibilities and playing techniques.

Together with Lydia Kavina, Barbara Buchholz founded the Touch! Platform in 2005 . Don't touch! for the theremin in new music . Moritz Eggert , Michael Hirsch, Caspar Johannes Walter, Juliane Klein , Peter Gahn, Gordon Kampe and Sidney Corbett composed among others for the two thereminists and their ensemble.

In the field of jazz and improvised music , she performed with various ensembles. The jazz musicians Arve Henriksen and Jan Bang played on their album "Moonstruck" (2008) ; From 2008 Barbara Buchholz was a member of the Jazz Big Band Graz , on whose album Urban Folktales (ACT) she participated and with which she performed at the JazzFest Berlin 2010. Barbara Buchholz was supported by the projection artist Pedda Borowski when performing with her solo program Theremin: Russia with Love .

She played the theremin part in various contemporary orchestral works, including “The Little Mermaid”, a ballet by John Neumeier with music by Lera Auerbach , the opera “Linkerhand” by Moritz Eggert or the “Bestmann Opera” by Alex Nowitz.

Barbara Buchholz appeared in the talent show Das Supertalent in 2009 , where she played the theremin and presented it to an audience of millions. She reached the semi-finals with her instrument.

Barbara Buchholz died on April 10, 2012 in Berlin after suffering from cancer for a long time.

Prizes and awards

In 1989 she was a prizewinner at the “Jazzszene NRW” with the Duo Wilde Ehespiel Jazz and in 1995 she received a Silver Amadeus at the “Musik Kreativ” competition for the Duo Brass , Bass and Bellaphonie with the Aachen clarinetist Regina Pastuszyk . In 1996 she won first prize at the Herford city jazz competition with the Tap It Deep group . In 1998 a second prize followed at the composition competition for jazz and improvised music in East Westphalia-Lippe for the trio of the future with Matthias Muche , trombone and Frank Wingold , guitar. In 2002 Buchholz received a special prize from the city of Bielefeld at the NRW composition competition for her interactive video-music project Waves with the video filmmaker Zeha Schröder and the sound engineer Sascha Kramski. A grant from the NRW Ministry of Culture in 2003 enabled her to work at the Theremincenter Moscow. On January 8, 2011, Barbara Buchholz received the Westphalia Jazz Prize at the Münster Jazz Festival for her repositioning of the Theremin in music.
