Lydia Kavina ( Russian Лидия Евгеньевна Кавина , German transcription Lidija Evgenjewna Kawina ; born September 8, 1967 in Moscow ) is a Russian musician and virtuoso on the theremin , an electronic musical instrument that is played without contact.

Life

At the age of nine, Lydia Kavina received lessons on the theremin from its inventor, the then 80-year-old Leon Theremin . She studied composition at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow.

Since 1983 she has performed worldwide, u. a. with the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra , the London Symphony Orchestra , the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Russian National Orchestra . She also played in numerous world premieres by other composers: the Tom Waits musicals Alice 1992 at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg and Black Rider 1997 at the Halle Kalk in Cologne. Further appearances in 2001 were the opera Bählamms Fest by Olga Neuwirth and the Neumeier ballet The Little Mermaid (music: Lera Auerbach ).

For the film, she recorded the score for Der Maschinist , Ed Wood and eXistenZ and had a film appearance in Ich und Kaminski .

In addition to her concert activities, she also holds workshops, master classes and lectures around the world and has composed numerous works for the theremin (in various formations).
