Paulo Bellinati

Paulo Bellinati (born September 22, 1950 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian guitarist and composer.

Life

As a child Bellinati had guitar lessons from his father and from the age of 17 studied at the Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo with Isaías Sávio . On a scholarship, he went to Switzerland in 1975, where he studied at the Geneva Conservatory and then taught at the Lausanne Conservatory . With his own band he performed at European jazz festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival , the Ozone Jazz in Neuchâtel and the Festival du Bois de La Batîe in Geneva.

In the 1980s he worked in Europe, Asia and America with musicians such as Steve Swallow , the Brazilian singer Mônica Salmaso , the Brazilian flautist Antonio Carrasqueira , with Renaud Garcia-Fons , Jean-Louis Matinier , Lucilla Galeazzi , Antonio Placer , Carla Bley , Gal Costa , Leila Pinheiro , João Bosco , César Camargo Mariano , Edu Lobo , Chico Buarque and the group Pau Brasil , with whom he recorded five albums. In 1994 he received the Prêmio Sharp as arranger of Gal Costa's album O Sorriso do Gato de Alice . He also worked as an arranger for Edu Lobo, Leila Pinheiro and Vânia Bastos .

Bellinati composed works for guitar solo, for guitar duo, trio and quartet as well as for guitar and vocals, some of which he recorded himself on his albums, and those by musicians such as John Williams , the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet , Costas Cotsiolis , the guitar quartet Quaternaglia , Badi Assad , Cristina Azuma , Shinichi Fukuda and Carlos Barbosa Lima . In 1988 he received the first prize for composition with the solo piece Jongo at the eighth Carrefour Mondial de la Guitare in Martinique .

Bellinati made particular contributions to the work of the composer and guitarist Garoto (Aníbal Augusto Sardinha), which he transcribed and recorded in the double album The Guitar Works of Garoto .
