César Camargo Mariano
César Camargo Mariano (born September 3, 1943 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian jazz pianist , arranger , composer and music producer .

Mariano, who taught himself to play the piano as an autodidact at the age of 13 , was invited a few months later in June 1957 by Melba Liston to take part in her performance in a jazz club in Rio de Janeiro ; he also appeared on Globo Radio in a program as "the boy prodigy who plays jazz". From his father, a music teacher, he received music theory tools. In the early 1960s he became a member of the William Furneaux Orchestra, with which he played dance music. Soon afterwards he formed a quartet with Flavio Abattipietro (trumpet), Theo de Barros (bass) and José Luis Schiavo (drums). With his own larger formation Três Américas , he took over part of the obligations of the band leader Enrico Simonetti. In 1962 he also appeared in the quartet of Sabá Oliveira, with whom he recorded his first album in 1963. Mariano also produced and arranged for Claudete Soares whose Claudete é Dona da Bossa. In 1964 he founded the Sambalanço Trio with Airto Moreira and Humberto Clayber . With the dancer and singer Lennie Dale he produced a successful bossa nova show, which resulted in the album Lennie Dale & Sambalanço Trio No Zum-Zum , which received two prizes from Jornal do Brasil . Between 1965 and 1971 Mariano led his trio Som Três. He also arranged for the singer Marisa Gata Mansa and from 1968 worked as musical director for Wilson Simonal . In 1969 he took part in the Festival of Black Arts in Senegal with the singer Elizeth Cardoso and Som Três. In 1971 Elis Regina brought him to produce her album Elis (which was followed by twelve more albums with Elis Regina, including in 1973 Elis e Tom with Antônio Carlos Jobim ). He also founded a new quartet with Helio Delmiro (guitar), Luisão Maia (bass) and Paulinho Braga (drums).
In the next few years he gave solo concerts, toured with the show Ponte das Estrelas , performed with João Bosco at the Montreux Jazz Festival , wrote numerous film scores such as Arnaldo Jabors Eu Te Amo or Bruno Barretos Além da Paixão. He also worked for artists as diverse as Yo-Yo Ma and Blossom Dearie . In 1994 he moved to the USA, where he performed with Sadao Watanabe , with whom he also toured Japan. He also performed with Michel Petrucciani , Michael Brecker and Dianne Reeves .
His son Marcelo Mariano, who works as a musician, comes from his first marriage (with Marisa Gata Mansa). Pedro Mariano and Maria Rita , both singers in Brazil, come from his eight-year relationship with Elis Regina . The daughter from his marriage to Flavia Rodrigues Alves, Luisa Mariano Imbert, is internationally active as a singer.
In 2006 Camargo Mariano received a Latin Grammy Award for his life's work .
