Harvey Wainapel

Harvey Wainapel (born March 31, 1951 in Middletown, New York ) is an American saxophonist and clarinetist of modern jazz .

Live and act

Wainapel, who taught himself jazz by playing along on the radio, studied for two years with Joe Lovano and John Scofield at Berklee College of Music in Boston ; during this time he recorded with Gary Burton / Mike Gibbs ( In the Public Interest , 1973). From 1974 he worked in Europe for several years. a. with Boy Edgar , with Jango Edwards and his Friends Roadshow , in the Danish Klüvers Big Band and one year in the hr big band . After returning to the United States, after a stay in New York City , he went on a world tour with Ray Charles before settling in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1982 . There he worked a. a. with musicians like McCoy Tyner , Joe Henderson , Johnny Coles , Jeff Ballard and Billy Hart .

In 1992 Wainapel released his debut album At Home / On the Road . The tribute album Ambrosia: The Music of Kenny Barron was created in 1996 with the Dutch Metropole Orkest and a Brazilian octet with Marcos Silva . In 1996 he went on tour with Joe Lovano. A duo album with choro compositions was created with Paulo Bellinati ( New Choros of Brazil , 2004). Wainapel also participated in the recordings of Tito Puente ( Un Poco Loco , 1987), Tuck & Patti ( Learning How to Fly , 1994) and Mark Levine ( Isla , 2002).

Wainapel was nominated for two BAMMY (Bay Area Music) awards for outstanding woodwind and outstanding jazz musician. For fifteen years he taught at Sonoma State University and the Stanford Jazz Workshop .
