Aly Keïta (* 1969 in Abidjan ) is an Ivorian balafon player.

Live and act

Keïta, who comes from a Griot family of the Malinké (which also produced the singer Salif Keïta ), studied the classical pentatonic tuned balafon with Zouratié Coulibaly in Mali. In 1986 he played jazz music for the first time with Georges Makinto . He subsequently developed a diatonic balafon, which he adapted to the requirements of Western music.

In Niamey , Keita ran workshops for traditional and modern music on behalf of the Center de Formation et de Promotion musicale from 1989 to 1995 . From 1998–1999 he taught at the Abidjan School of Art, where he worked with arrangers Maiga Bogana and Paul Wassaba , among others .

International cultural institutes in Abidjan (such as the Goethe Institute ) invited him to projects with foreign musicians. He has performed with Pharoah Sanders , Talib Kibwe , Philippe Sellam / Gilles Renne , Linley Marthe , Étienne M'Bappé , Paco Séry , Adepo Yapo , Camel Zekri , Rhoda Scott , Masahiro Sayama , Jean-Philippe Rykiel , Majid Bekkas and Joe , among others Zawinul up. With Hans Lüdemann and Steve Argüelles (now Christian Thomé ) he forms the Trio Ivoire , with whom he has toured several times and recorded a number of albums. In 2008 he presented his first album under his own name. He went on international solo tours with Paco Séry and El Hadj N'Diaye .

The musician, who now lives in Berlin, leads the group The Balankan (with Hannes Kies , saxophone, Benedict Stehle , drums, Arcadius , bass), with which he recorded the album Akwana Inisene in 2008 .
