Jean-Philippe Rykiel

Jean-Philippe Rykiel (* 1961 in Paris ) is a French musician ( keyboard , composition , arrangement ) who has made a name for himself in fusion and world music .

Live and act

Rykiel, who has been blind since birth, is the son of fashion designer Sonia Rykiel . He taught himself to play the piano at an early age and was soon considered a child prodigy . At the Tabarka Jazz Festival in 1973 he met the musicians from Gong and began to deal with the Minimoog ; as a teenager he also met Frank Zappa and Stevie Wonder . In the late 1970s he performed with Tim Blake on Crystal Machine in France and Japan. Together with Federea Agyeman, he founded the band Bloom with the former gong members Didier Malherbe and Winston Berkley, which often played in French jazz clubs but did not go to the record studio.

Later he often worked in the field of world music , especially with Youssou N'Dour , with whom he also toured since 1990, and Salif Keïta , as well as the Tibetan monk Lama Gyurmé . In 1992 Rykiel wrote the score for Les Pierres bleues du désert by Nabil Ayouch .

He is also on albums with Brigitte Fontaine , Steve Hillage , Jon & Vangelis , Catherine Lara , Youssou N'Dour , the Senegalese band Xalam , Jon Hassell , Leonard Cohen , Didier Malherbe, Ousemane Kouyaté , Papa Wemba , the Super Rail Band , Mamadou Diallo , Lokua Kanza , Marcel Loeffler or Amadou & Mariam .
