Timothy Charles Gorrod "Tim" Blake (born February 6, 1952 in Shepherd's Bush , London ) is an Anglo-French musician. He is known for his collaboration with the space rock bands Gong and Hawkwind and has also released several albums with his performance project Crystal Machine .

Life

Blake has lived in France since 1970, where he and Philippe Denis founded the Crystal Machine Studio , where he experimented with synthesizers in particular . In the early 1970s he joined the band Gong , with whom he recorded the three-album Radio Gnome Trilogy , the central work of the band, and was on several tours. Blake's contributions are particularly futuristic synthesizer sounds, which partly make up the space rock character of Gong's music. In 1975 he worked on the first solo album Fish Rising by gong guitarist Steve Hillage . When Gong broke up in 1975, Blake founded the performance project Crystal Machine with light artist Patrice Warrener , in which he performed electronic music for Warrener's light show. He recorded his first two solo albums Crystal Machine and New Jerusalem and in 1978 embarked on a world tour of Europe and Japan. In 1979 Blake was on tour with the band Hawkwind and played a studio album with them. He then retired as a musician and for over a decade only worked as a consultant for musicians and radio stations. Since 1991 he has been releasing albums again and doing his own tours. Between 1994 and 1998 he was also seen at various gong reunion appearances, and since 2000 together with Hawkwind again.
