Fish Rising is the first solo album by the English guitarist Steve Hillage . It was released on Virgin Records in 1975 .
Creation and publication
The time of the Radio Gnome Trilogy at Gong was a productive and turbulent one: three albums were made, a tour took place and there were several line-up changes. a. Steve Hillage's partner Miquette Giraudy joined in 1974, and Gong founder Daevid Allen left the band in 1975. Guitarist Steve Hillage had already started recording his solo debut with several gong members (Giraudy, Mike Howlett , Tim Blake , Didier Malherbe , Pierre Moerlen ). Partly from his time with Khan . With David L. Stewart and Lindsay Cooper , two other musicians from the Canterbury scene at the time were involved. After the release of Fish Rising , Hillage and Giraudy also left Gong to pursue his solo career. A CD version of the album was first released in 1990, and the remastered version from 2007 included bonus tracks.

style
The varied album is mostly instrumental and stylistically reminds in many ways of Gong's release from the time before, but brings Hillage's guitar more to the fore and is kept more serious despite the hippiesque lyrics. So there are time changes, guitar solos and keyboard surfaces as well as jazzy and psychedelic passages. Fish Rising is mostly assigned to the Canterbury Sound and Space Rock : "Jazzed up spacerock in Canterbury style, that's what you could call the whole thing in short".
reception
Hillage himself calls Fish Rising his "favorite solo album". Chris Nickson from Allmusic describes it as a "success", Achim Breiling as "a very refreshing record and also, in my opinion, the best solo LP from Hillage". In 2005, eclipsed magazine called it a "world cultural album" and in 2012 included it in its list of 150 most important prog albums.
