Pierre Moerlen

Pierre Moerlen (born October 23, 1952 in Colmar , † May 3, 2005 in Strasbourg ) was a French drummer and composer .

Moerlen received his first musical training on the piano from his father Maurice in 1963-67 . From 1967 to 1971 he studied drums with Jean Batigne . After completing his studies, he played in various bands until he joined the band Gong around Steve Hillage and Daevid Allen in 1973, who are counted among the protagonists of space rock . Gong was to experience several changes of line-up and split up in 1976, with the branch of the group led by Moerlen performing percussive jazz rock as Pierre Moerlen's Gong , which in addition to Pierre's drums, in particular, also performed with the vibraphonehis brother Benoît was shaped.

In 1986 Pierre Moerlen's Gong was briefly re-formed with Hansford Rowe on bass , Benoît Moerlen on vibraphone and percussion and numerous changing guests. 1989 to 1990 collaboration with Alsace-Percussion , from 1991 as a drummer in several musical shows ( Evita , Jesus Christ Superstar , Les Misérables , West Side Story ) on tours in Europe and America.

1997 to 1998 member of the band Brand X with Percy Jones on their Japan and Europe tours. 1998 also appearances with gong in Europe and America.

Moerlen also played with Charlie Mariano , Didier Lockwood , Slapp Happy , Henry Cow and others.

Pierre Moerlen died unexpectedly on May 3, 2005.
