Les Percussions de Strasbourg
Les Percussions de Strasbourg is a Strasbourg- based ensemble for contemporary classical music made up of six percussionists . The ensemble, founded in 1962, still exists today.
history
When Pierre Boulez was invited to Strasbourg in 1959 to perform his work Le Visage nuptial , the percussionists of the two local symphony orchestras - the Orchester municipal and the Orchester de l'ORTF - were required. Based on their experiences, the musicians decided to found a percussion ensemble together in order to interpret other works of new music together.
The formation was founded in 1961 by the classical percussionists Bernard Balet, Jean Batigne, Luden Droeller, Jean-Paul Finkbeiner, Claude Ricou and Georges Van Gucht under the patronage of Boulez: the Groupe Instrumental à Percussion later became Les Percussions de Strasbourg . The first concert took place on January 17th, 1962 at the ORTF .
The ensemble has premiered more than 300 works of contemporary classical music, including the Eight Inventions by Miloslav Kabeláč (1963), Karlheinz Stockhausen's Music in the Belly (1975) and Iannis Xenakis ' Pléïades (1979). With its commissioned compositions, it has contributed to the enrichment of the new music repertoire. The composition commission given to Xenakis in 1969 led Pershephassa to explore the world of percussion instruments and even invent his own percussion instruments. Composers such as Olivier Messiaen , Kazimierz Serocki , Maurice Ohana , François Bernard Mâche and Hugues Dufourt set about composing works for this cast.
Early on who Percussions de Strasbourg crossed borders: In 1967, the six percussionists led the ionization of Edgar Varèse on the approval of the composer, although the score would have required the participation of thirteen percussionists. The ensemble also went on tour and played at relevant festivals such as the Donaueschinger Musiktage .
