Philippe Sellam (born October 24, 1960 in Algiers ) is a French jazz musician ( saxophone and composition ).

Live and act

Sellam began to play the saxophone as an autodidact at the age of 15 and initially orientated himself on the music of Chicago . He studied at the Institute Art Culture Perception of Alan Silva . In the early 1980s he appeared on the French jazz scene with Silva's Celestrial Communication Orchestra ( Desert Mirage , 1982), where he then belonged to Laurent Cugny's big band Lumière with Gil Evans as well as to La Bande à Badault and the orchestra in the early 1990s National de Jazz under the direction of Denis Badault ( À plus tard , 1992). From 1990 he played in Megaoctet of Andy Emler and searched in the same year the cooperation with the guitarist Gilles Renne , with whom he from 1993 in Sellam-Renne African Project worked. In 2002 he founded the group NoJazz (whose first album was produced by Teo Macero and with which he can be seen on Canal + on Saturdays in the program Salut les Terriens since 2006 ). He also directed the band Captain Mercier .

He also played with Michel Petrucciani , Paco Séry , Michel Portal , Roy Hargrove , Mino Cinelu , Bernard Purdie , Laurent de Wilde , Glenn Ferris , Omar Sosa , Stéphane Belmondo , Emmanuel Bex , Médéric Collignon , Electro de luxe , François Jeanneau , Patrice Caratini , Chico Freeman , John Scofield , MC Solaar , but also with Henri Salvador , Charles Aznavour , Claude Nougaro , Michel Jonasz , Sanseverino , Lio , Mangu , Wally Badarou or Jean-Jacques Milteau . He is involved in more than 100 record productions.
