The Trio Ivoire is a world jazz trio that was founded in 1999 by jazz pianist Hans Lüdemann .

history

As part of a solo - tour through West Africa learned Lüdemann 1998 balafon poker players Aly Keïta know and worked then one year with him. After a year they founded the Trio Ivoire in 1999, reinforced by the drummer Steve Argüelles . With this line-up, the trio recorded two albums: the self-titled debut album ( Enja , 2000) and Touching Africa (RISM / Alive, 2006). In 2007 Argüelles got out and was replaced by Chander Sardjoe . At the Harare International Festival of the Arts , the trio gave concerts in 2007 and 2008 with the singer and Mbira player Chiwoniso, who also performed in concerts in Germany and on the third album Across the Oceans .

In February 2012 the trio played a concert in Hamburg with the NDR Bigband under the direction of Geir Lysne , which was also broadcast on NDR. Sardjoe remained part of the trio until 2012, with whom he recorded the work Across the Oceans in 2009 , before Christian Thomé joined the band's biography as the new drummer. In 2018 the band gave several concerts with Dobet Gnahoré .

style

In a review of the Timbuktu album , Hans Hielscher from Spiegel Online described the style as “a delightful fusion of African and European sounds and rhythms”.

reception

In the follow-up coverage of an appearance, the Neue Ruhr Zeitung noted:

“In some places, an almost frenzied pace is reached. The audience has a lot of trouble clapping along to the beat. The more virtuoso Keita works the instrument with his mallets, the more impressed the audience will be. The harmony that exists between the different musicians is fascinating. The fun that the three of them have with their music is unmistakable - the laughing at each other, the mutual engagement. "

- Petra Lehmann : New Ruhr newspaper

In a review of the 2017 Desert Pulse plant , it said:

"It takes a certain surrealist sovereignty, a poetic freedom to bring these instruments together, and only rarely do such encounters take place under such a friendly starry sky."

- Stefan Hentz : Jazz thing
