Johannes Bockholt (musician)

Johannes Bockholt is a German jazz drummer.

Bockholt studied jazz at the Berlin University of the Arts until 1989 with Sigi Busch , David Friedman and Jerry Granelli . After completing his studies, he took over the program management of the Berlin jazz club A-Trane until 1995 .

Since it was founded in 1990, he has been a member of the Out of Print group with bassist Dirk Strakhof and pianist Volker Kottenhahn , which initially also worked with singer Celine Rudolph . The group received first prize at the nationwide jazz competition in Leipzig in 1992, released their first album in 1994, toured a. a. through Romania and South Africa and had radio productions at WDR, NDR, MDR and ORB. Five more albums followed.

In 1994 he received the Berlin Senate Prize for the Linear Ensemble formation . In the same year he became a member of the group Improvisers Pool (with Alexander von Schlippenbach and Manfred Schoof ), which recorded the album Background for Improvisers with Sam Rivers the following year .

In 1995 he went on a tour of Southeast Asia with the Linear Ensemble on behalf of the Goethe Institute, followed in 1996 by a tour of Central America and a study visit to New York. Since 1997 he has been working with The Globe Band (with Jerry Granelli and Jane Ira Bloom ). In 2000 he performed with Nicolas Simion at the Jazz Across the Border Festival in Berlin . Other musical partners included a. Aki Takase , Lauren Newton , Franz Bauer and Henriette Müller .

From 1999 to 2009 Bockholt taught as a visiting professor at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, where he set up a course in jazz music. He currently works as a lecturer for jazz ensemble and improvisation at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
