Franz Bauer (* 1968 in Bad Aibling ) is a German jazz musician ( mallets , also drums , composition ).

Bauer, who worked as a drummer in various bands during his school days, studied classical music at the Munich University of Music between 1987 and 1992 until he graduated as a drummer . Then he studied until 1998 in the pedagogical program of the Berlin University of the Arts , majoring in vibraphone / marimba with David Friedman . He received further lessons from Dave Samuels , Richie Beirach and Dave Liebman .

Bauer already played in the Duo Marimbao with Rupert Stamm during his studies . In 1996 he founded his Franz Bauer Quintet ; winning the Berlin Senate contest in 1997 allowed with guest drummer Jim Black , the production of the album plush toy , which at JazzHausMusik was published. He also played in Dirk Strakhof's band Batoru , with which two CDs are made (with Nils Petter Molvær and Michael Schiefel ), and since 1997 as a member of the Ensemble for New Music United Berlin .

Bauer continued to work with Georg Katzer and Matthias Bauer . In 2005 he also belonged to Rupert Stamm's vibraphone quartet Xylon (with Tom van der Geld and Taiko Saitō ). He also experimented with electronics in a solo program (album Bouché 2006). He is currently active in Nicolai Thärichens HendrixPerience Orchestra (album with Laika 2016). He can also be heard on albums by the Panama Ensemble ( Der Maulwurf Grabowski ), Frank Paul Schubert , the Percussion Projekt Rostock , Jörg Schippa, Robert Metcalf , Christof Griese , Esther Kaiser and Mo 'Blow .

Since 2003 he has also been teaching at the Paul Hindemith Music School in Neukölln.
