action

Norman Phiffier makes a living doing small jobs like dog sitting. But because he would like to marry his girlfriend Barbara Fuller, he is looking for permanent work with which he can earn a lot of money. He doesn't know that his girlfriend is actually called Barbara Tuttle and that she is the daughter of the department store owner Phoebe Tuttle. She is not enthusiastic about the affair of her rebellious daughter and wants to get rid of Norman as quickly as possible with the help of the branch manager Mr. Quimby.

Under false pretenses, Norman gets a job at the Tuttle department store in New York City . There he should, according to Phoebe's will, deal with the worst tasks and finally give up, whereupon Barbara should realize what a failure her boyfriend is. But contrary to expectations, Norman does not give up, although some goods are destroyed and he is even injured by a hired wrestler. Barbara then explains to her mother that she has seen through her game and that Norman will soon be married. When she buys a wedding dress the next day, Phoebe forges new intrigues against Norman.

But when even Barbara's father, company president John P. Tuttle, approves the wedding, Phoebe's collar bursts. Before she can throw Norman out of the department store himself, he accidentally destroys the electronics department with a vacuum cleaner; Phoebe then reveals Barbara as her daughter. Norman is offended that Barbara never told him the truth; he quits and goes back to the poodle service. When Barbara and her parents also show up at the poodle service a little later, wearing apologies on their uniforms, he forgives them. In the end, Norman and Barbara happily embrace each other.

Trivia
