A. Edward Sutherland
A. Edward "Eddie" Sutherland (born January 5, 1895 in London , † December 31, 1973 in Palm Springs , California ) was a British film director , film producer and silent film actor .
Life
A. Edward Sutherland was born in London to American parents. His father Al Sutherland was a theater manager and his mother Julie Ring a vaudeville actress, which introduced him to show business as a child. His aunt was the theater star Blanche Ring , and another aunt was married to the famous silent film actor Thomas Meighan . In 1914 Sutherland came to film as an actor, initially for the comedy producer Mack Sennett . To directing Sutherland came as assistant director of Charlie Chaplin . He assisted him on the films The Kid , The Nights of a Beautiful Woman and Gold Rush . During the gold rush , he controlled Chaplin while he was in front of the camera. In 1925 he directed his first own film.
Sutherland was particularly successful with comedies in the 1930s and 1940s. He worked with comedians like Laurel and Hardy , Abbott and Costello, and WC Fields , among others . While Sutherland had a close drinking friendship with Fields, after working with Stan Laurel on In the Foreign Legion , Sutherland said he would rather direct a tarantula than Laurel. In 1946 he directed and produced the film adaptation of the Broadway play Abie's Irish Rose starring Joanne Dru , which, however, became a financial failure and practically ended his Hollywood career. Except for the B-movie Bermuda Affair in 1956, he made no further feature films. In the 1950s he worked as a producer and director for British television.
Southerland was married a total of five times. His best-known wife was silent film star Louise Brooks , but the marriage was divorced in 1928 after only two years.
