The film.

Following the film, some viewers are said to have believed that they saw a real execution here. This was not the case, Robert Thomae was previously exchanged for a deceptively similar looking doll. This is the first stop trick in the history of the film.

The film is considered by film historians to be the first historical film in film history. It was also reused for the 2005 documentary Edison: The Invention of the Movies .
