Podzimek made his international debut on December 30, 1983 at the Ski Jumping World Cup in Oberstdorf as part of the Four Hills Tournament 1983/84 . On January 14, 1984 in Harrachov he reached eighth place for the first time the points and a place in the top ten. After another top 10 placement in Liberec , he received the nomination for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, which also counted as the World Cup. There he reached eighth place in jumping on the large hill, after having had to settle for 39th place on the normal hill. The team competition of the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1984 took place in Engelberg . He won the bronze medal with the team. After the Olympics, he was able to convince with good results in the World Cup. On March 11, 1984 he was able to win his first and only World Cup competition at Holmenkollbakken .
At the ski flying world championship in 1986 he narrowly missed the medals with a fourth place. In the World Cup, after his victory in 1984, he was unable to maintain his performance consistently. Best place was a second place in Lahti in 1987 . After he was again unable to achieve consistent performance, he ended his active ski jumping career in 1991 at the age of only 25.
Podzimek hanged himself in 1994 at the age of 29 after his wife Vladka moved out with their daughter.
