Thomas Aasen Markeng (born June 18, 2000 ) is a Norwegian ski jumper .

Career

From international debut to first junior medal

Thomas Aasen Markeng starts for the Lensbygda Sportsklubb . He made his debut on July 11, 2015 in Villach in the FIS Cup , where he reached 59th place. On August 18, 2017, Markeng started for the first time on the Skalite normal hill in Szczyrk in the Continental Cup . He reached fifteenth place, with which he also got his first Continental Cup points.

At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2018 in Kandersteg in February 2018, Markeng took 14th place in the individual competition and third place in the team competition together with Fredrik Villumstad , Jesper Ødegaard and Marius Lindvik and thus won the bronze medal.

2018/19 - As junior world champion at the World Championships in Seefeld

On January 15, 2019, Markeng became Norwegian Junior Champion on the Granåsen large hill in Trondheim ahead of Sander Vossan Eriksen and Anders Ladehaug . At the Norwegian championships he finished eighth on the same day. Nine days later, Markeng won the gold medal in the individual at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2019 in Lahti, Finland, ahead of Luca Roth and Sergei Tkachenko . Together with Fredrik Villumstad, Anders Ladehaug and Sander Vossan Eriksen he won the silver medal in the team competition, as well as in the mixed team competition with Ingebjørg Saglien Bråten , Fredrik Villumstad and Silje Opseth .

On February 9, 2019, Markeng surprisingly achieved third place at the Continental Cup competition in Iron Mountain and thus a podium place in the Continental Cup for the first time. On the same day, the junior world champion even won the second competition on the Pine Mountain Jump hill and thus clinched his first Continental Cup victory.

On February 15, 2019, Markeng made his debut in the ski jumping World Cup at the team competition on the Mühlenkopfschanze in Willingen , where he finished fourth with Halvor Egner Granerud , Johann André Forfang and Robert Johansson . One day later, Markeng got his first World Cup points with a 27th place in the Willingen Five 2019 . On February 18, 2019, the Norwegian Ski Association announced that Markeng was in the five-man squad for the 2019 Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld . Markeng was not used in the competitions on the large hill, but due to his consistently good performance in the four training rounds on the normal hill, he was nominated by the Norwegian head trainer Alexander Stöckl for the individual competition on the Toni-Seelos-Olympiaschanze . After he and Andreas Stjernen ranked seventh after the first round , Markeng only jumped 95.0 meters in the second round and finally landed as the second best Norwegian after Robert Johansson in 20th place. In the days that followed, the competition management was criticized, so that the sporting director of the German team Horst Hüttel , for example, complained that the jury did not intervene because of the heavy snowfall: “The second round was completely irregular. If that is not irregular, then I no longer understand the world. There is competition management for this. They failed miserably. ”Markeng concluded the season at the end of March by winning the championship title from Midtstubakken in Oslo .

2019/20 - Cruciate ligament tear

In the summer of 2019 Markeng made his debut in the Grand Prix , where he was able to jump into the points for the first time in Hinzenbach at the end of September . Before that, he finished third in the team competition in Zakopane from Wielka Krokiew together with Halvor Egner Granerud, Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang. At the start of the winter in Wisła , Markeng, together with Daniel-André Tande , Marius Lindvik and Robert Johansson, reached the podium for the first time in the World Cup in second place . At the second station in Ruka , Markeng was tenth, making him one of the top ten in the World Cup for the first time. Markeng had a hard fall at the World Cup jumping in Klingenthal . After an MRI scan, a cruciate ligament and meniscus tear was diagnosed, which will mean that it will be out for about a year. The Norwegian had to end the season prematurely with a strong 80 points.
