The Pine Mountain Jump in Iron Mountain consists of several ski jumps . The facility includes three small jumps of category K 10, K 25, K 38 and a large hill of category K 120.
history
Iron Mountain's first man-made ski jump was built on Hemlock Street in 1929. In 1933 the first iron ski jump on Crystal Lake, called Devils's Hill, was built and inaugurated on January 5th, 1934, at the same time the founding of the Kiwanis Ski Club was celebrated. In 1937 the construction of the ski jump on Pine Mountain was initiated, in 1938 the 156 foot high inrun scaffolding and the work on the landing hill were completed. The first jumping took place in 1939 and Bob Roecker from Duluth conquered Alf Engen with 257 feet and set a new American record. The Pine Mountain Jump has been renovated and renewed many times since then. a. In 1948 the landing slope was excavated, after a fire in 1977 the inrun was renewed and enlarged. In 1996 and 2000, World Cup competitions were held in front of up to 20,000 spectators on the largest large hill in the USA in Iron Mountain; since 2001, Continental Cup competitions have been held every year on the wind-prone hill.
The city is located in the US state of Michigan and is approximately 310 miles from Chicago and 320 from Minneapolis. The nearest airports are in Kingsford, Marquette and Green Bay.
