Diethart reached 23rd place on January 19th, 2008 in Eisenerz in his debut in the FIS Cup . One day later he was already in 13th place. Further missions in the FIS Cup followed until the 2008/09 season, where a 2nd place on March 4, 2009 in Zao, Japan, was his best result. He also jumped in the Alpine Cup .

On July 3rd in Velenje , Slovenia , he made his debut in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup and finished 5th in the end. The next day he was 16th in Kranj . On July 5th, he achieved his best result in the Continental Cup with a second place. More missions followed and in the end he reached sixth place in the overall standings. On September 12th, 2009 he won the Alpencup in Einsiedeln , Switzerland .

In December 2009 Diethart competed in the Alpencup several times and never made it into the top ten. On January 23, 2010 and January 24, 2010 he competed in the Continental Cup again and missed the second round in both competitions. On February 13, 2010, he finished 5th in the FIS Cup in Villach (Austria). He then won two Alpine Cups this season.

In July 2010 he played in the Continental Cup and in the FIS World Cup in Villach. Due to the success he was used for the first time in the ski jumping Grand Prix in Hakuba, Japan . In the qualification he was disqualified, but since only 32 other jumpers took part, he could still take part in the two competitions. On August 28th, he finished 35th out of 43 jumpers. A day later Diethart finished 36th and last place, because the Kazakh Yevgeny Lyovkin was disqualified. This summer he also played in the Continental Cup, where he finished second in Oslo . He qualified at the Grand Prix in Liberec and finished 44th on October 1st.

In December 2010 he won another Alpine Cup, this time in Seefeld, Austria . Diethart was nominated in the national group at the 3rd jumping of the Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck . On January 2nd, 2011, he qualified by placing 38th in the qualification for the competition. The next day, as 28th, he won World Cup points for the first time in his career. He benefited from the disqualification of the Bulgarian Wladimir Sografski , to whom he had lost in the knockout round. On February 6, 2011, he won a competition in the Continental Cup for the first time in Brotterode .

Diethart achieved five top ten results in the Continental Cup in summer and in December 2013, including a third place on September 21, 2013 in Klingenthal, so that he was nominated for the World Cup event in Engelberg in December 2013. After almost three years of World Cup abstinence and participation in lower-class competitions, Diethart qualified there for the main competitions, which he finished with fourth and sixth place. The first podium place in a World Cup competition he reached in the following week during the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf with third place. In the second competition of the Four Hills Tournament, the New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he tied to his third place in the first competition and won significantly his teammates Thomas Morgenstern and Simon Ammann from Switzerland. He achieved his first victory in his sixth competition in the FIS World Cup. After a fifth place in only one ranked round in Innsbruck Diethart achieved his second World Cup victory in the last tournament in Bischofshofen , which also secured him the overall victory of the Four Hills Tournament. On January 18, 2014, he took third place with the Austrian team in the team competition in Zakopane, Poland, and thus achieved his first team podium finish in the World Cup. At the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi he achieved 2nd place in the team competition together with Thomas Morgenstern, Gregor Schlierenzauer and Michael Hayböck and fourth place on the normal hill.

On February 28, 2016, he had a serious fall at the Continental Cup jumping competition in Brotterode. He suffered severe facial injuries as well as bruises on the spine, lungs and kidney. After his recovery, he only started several times in the third-class FIS Cup.

On November 29, 2017 Diethart had a serious fall during a training session for the ÖSV continental team in Ramsau am Dachstein. He lost control of his skis when he jumped and fell onto the hill porch. He sustained considerable injuries, including a severe concussion with slight bleeding into the brain, a squeezed lungs and severe abrasions.

For health reasons, he ended his career in April 2018 at the age of 26. In September 2019 Diethart completed the first part of the ski jumping trainer training. He then worked as a trainer for the Tyrolean Ski Association and the Absam Nordic Team.
