Sigurd Ørjan Pettersen (born February 28, 1980 in Kongsberg ) is a former Norwegian ski jumper .

Career

Pettersen took part in a World Cup ski jumping for the first time relatively late. At the age of 21, he competed in Hakuba in 2002. He was discovered by the then head coach of the Norwegian national team Mika Kojonkoski . In his second World Cup season in 2002/03 , Pettersen was able to win two World Cup competitions.

His victory in the Four Hills Tournament 2003/04 was only the second Norwegian success in the last 30 years, after the Norwegians had dominated the tour in the 1950s and 1960s.

Due to an FIS rule change in the summer of 2004, concerning the body mass index , Pettersen had to gain a few kilograms in order to be able to continue using his usual ski length. Having to jump with this new body sensation proved difficult. A 2nd place in Lillehammer was his best result of the 2004/05 season .

The following winter wasn't much better either. Two 5th places, in Harrachov / Czech Republic and Willingen (Upland) , were his best individual results. He finished third with the team in Willingen. At the Olympic Games in Turin / Pragelato he was only 24th on the large hill, so that he was not nominated for the team competition in which the Norwegians won bronze.

With good results at the Summer Grand Prix 2006 , where he was 13th in Zakopane and Klingenthal and 11th in Oberhof , he was able to improve his last declining performance.

After a 15th place in Kuusamo at the beginning of the 2006/07 World Cup season, things went downhill again, so that he took a World Cup break after Engelberg and only returned to Titisee-Neustadt in 20th and 13th place. The best results of the season were a 4th place each in Willingen and Planica . On January 13th, 2008 Pettersen surprisingly jumped onto the podium with a 2nd place in Val di Fiemme . It was his last podium finish in the World Cup so far. Since 2008 Pettersen has been a permanent member of the Norwegian team in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup and was only occasionally nominated for World Cup competitions. Pettersen has already won several competitions in the Continental Cup since 2008, including in Engelberg and Braunlage .

Since December 29, 2003 he has held the hill record on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf with 143.5 meters .

After the 2009/10 season , he ended his ski jumping career.
