Jerry Kenneth Martin (born August 18, 1950 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is a retired American ski jumper .

Career

Martin, whose older brother Jay was also a ski jumper, began ski jumping at the age of five under the guidance of his father Ken. At the age of seven he jumped from a 30 meter hill for the first time. He started training with Ed Brisson. In 1965, at the age of 14, he became US Junior Champion in Bend Oregon . He was the youngest jumper to have achieved this title. At the age of 12 he jumped over 70 meters for the first time, and at 15 he jumped over 90 meters. At the age of 17 he was accepted into the national team.

He began his international career with the start of the Four Hills Tournament in 1967/68 . After he had skipped the jumping in Oberstdorf , he could not prevail in the other three competitions and finished the tour in 60th overall. Even two years later at the Four Hills Tournament 1969/70 he did not make a breakthrough. The best result was a 49th place in Oberstdorf on the Schattenbergschanze . In the overall ranking he reached 59th place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1970 in Štrbské Pleso , he started in both individual disciplines. After rank 44 on the normal hill, he reached rank 48 on the large hill.

In 1971 Martin became the US champion for the first time. A little later he seriously injured his eye with a nail. He lost his right eyesight. Despite this handicap, he started at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo . There he was ranked 34th on the normal hill and 36th on the large hill.

In 1973 he won the national title for the second time. This time the US championships were held on the Copper Peak ski jumping hill in Ironwood .

At the Four Hills Tournament in 1973/74 he made it into the top 20 for the first time. In Oberstdorf he achieved his best individual result in a tour with 13th place. After he reached the places 24 and 20 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck , he finished the tour on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen as 61. In the overall ranking he reached the 26th place tied with Jaromír Liďák .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1974 in Falun , Martin started from the normal hill and after jumps on 75 and 76 meters reached the 39th place, tied with Josef Schwinghammer .

In 1975 Martin was the third and final American champion. A year later he was able to jump to places 27 and 32 at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck .

After he had ended his active ski jumping career shortly afterwards, he took over the junior coaching position at the Minneapolis Ski Club. In 2008 he was inducted into the American Ski Jumping Hall of Fame with his brother .
