history

The region has been inhabited by humans since the Mesolithic . The Iberians settled the place to protect the historic road Camino de los Metedores (smugglers route). Under Roman rule until around 450 AD, Andalusia became an urban region, and many of the residents of this area even received Roman citizenship. Around 711 the Moors crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and conquered the south of Spain within a few years. In the 10th century they founded the town of Zuheros and built the castle to protect it. In the course of the Reconquista , the area of Ferdinand III. Conquered in 1241. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle served as a defense against its former masters until the last Moors were expelled from Spain in 1492.

Zuhero's population grew from 90 residents in 1530 to 195 in 1694 and doubled a century later. The increase in population was caused by the construction of a Renaissance palace at the end of the 16th century. The long absence of the castle owners later led to its decay and its stones were used as building material for the houses of the growing population in the 18th century.

Opposite the castle is the local church, which is dedicated to the patron saint Nuestra Senora de los Remedios . It was built in the 16th century, completely rebuilt in 1696 and finally got its bell tower in 1795.
