history

Pozoblanco Town Hall
City center

Probably the beginning of Pozoblanco, similar to the first settlement of the surrounding villages, such as Villanueva de Córdoba , dates back to the 14th century. During this time, many residents of neighboring Pedroche fled the plague . Other theories suggest that the people of Pedroche were choosing increasingly remote places to graze their cattle. In order not to have to travel the long way to the city every day, they formed small settlements where they spent their lives. Villages like Pozoblanco could have emerged from this. The first settlements arose in what is now known as the «Pozo Viejo» (Old Well), at the foot of a hill and near a well that was white because of the lime plaster, because only plastered bricks were used for simple buildings and not expensive ones Used granite blocks. This explains the name of the place. The fountain can be found in the municipality's coat of arms. The common name for the inhabitants of Pozoblancos is «tarugos». It comes from the name for timber (logs; tarugos de madera). Many people from Pozoblanco operated timber trade. They drove through the area in carts and distributed the logs. When they came into a village, they honked the horn. So that people could get from work to buy. They then ran over and shouted from afar: "¡¡Ya vienen los tarugos !!" - "There come the posts", by which they meant the wood. Ultimately, however, this name stuck to the people of Pozoblanco.

Initially, until 1478, Pozoblanco belonged to Pedroche. Then it acquired the title of city (villa), possibly from the hands of the Catholic Kings . In the Middle Ages, the history of Pozoblanco was closely linked to the history of the "Seven Cities of Los Pedroches" (Siete Villas de los Pedroches) ( Pedroche , Torremilano , Torrecampo , Pozoblanco, Villanueva de Córdoba , Alcaracejos and Añora ). This unity only broke up in 1836 and the parish land was returned to the villages. Pozoblanco received the city charter (ciudad) from the hand of King Alfonso XIII. on April 22, 1923. In the Spanish Civil War , the community was badly affected, probably also because it remained loyal to the Republic all along . In March 1937 it was the scene of the Battle of Pozoblanco (batalla de Pozoblanco), in which the forces of General Gonzalo Queipo de Llano tried to take the city. The resistance of the Republicans thwarted this, however, and the troops of the Ejército Popular de la República under Coronel Joaquín Pérez Salas managed to win a great victory over the Bando Sublevado . It was not until the end of March 1939 that the community was captured by the Franco armed forces and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (etapa franquista) was introduced in Pozoblanco.

On September 26, 1984 in the Plaza de Pozoblanco (Córdoba), Francisco Rivera Paquirri , together with El Yiyo and El Soro , was taken on the horns by a shrewd bull at the Ganadería de Sayalero y Bandrés . Important veins were injured in the attack and his pelvis and thighs were broken. He died while driving to the hospital.
