Carcabuey is a municipality in the Spanish province of Cordoba in central Andalusia . The name comes from the Arabic word karkabul and means little access to mountains . The place is located on the eastern edge of the UNESCO- recognized Geopark Sierras Subbéticas , the Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas . Carcabuey is located in a lower corridor that separates the southern Sierra de la Hornicera from the northern Cabra Mountains. These are karst mountains with rugged cliffs, deep gorges and numerous caves.

On January 1, 2019, Carcabuey had a total of 2412 inhabitants on a total area of 79.74 km². The place is at an altitude of 625 m. The landmark is the mighty medieval castle, which towers over the village on a limestone massif nearby. Inside the castle, around which there are numerous legends, is the pilgrimage chapel of the Most Holy Virgin Mary of the Castle of Carcabuey (Ermita de la Virgen Maria Santisima del Castillo de Carcabuey), the patroness of the place. The crutches of the disabled pilgrims are attached to the walls because they no longer need them. Also worth seeing is the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church from the 14th century with a magnificent interior in Cordoba Baroque , as well as the two chapels Calvario and Aurora .

In caves outside the village, archaeological sites from the Mesolithic , Roman and Moors can be visited. The town's festivities include Corpus Christi Day , on which the streets are decorated with colored carpets made of sawdust, the festival in honor of the Virgen de la Aurora in August, and Good Friday with a procession based on the Passion of Jesus Christ .
