El Guijo is a Spanish municipality in the province of Cordoba in Andalusia . It belongs to the Comarca Los Pedroches and is geologically located in an area of volcanic origin. In 2019 the community had 355 inhabitants.

Naming

The name probably goes back to the ubiquitous gravel (span .: guijo) that occurs in the volcanic area.

history

A small hill that has eroded over time until it revealed important archaeological finds with Majadaiglesia gives an impression of the settlement in the 1st millennium BC. The splendor of Roman dwellings is evident in the excavations of the Roman villa, which was known as Villa de Santa María in an area with a strong Marian tradition as early as the 12th century . After the Reconquista , the whole area of El Guijo passed into the Señorío de Santa Eufemia and developed great importance as a gateway to Córdoba for transhumant shepherds and flocks who walked along the La Cañada Real Soriana y de La Mesta pasture. In the village, the route divided and one branch led into Extremadura , while the second led into the interior of Andalusia. The place was founded in the 13th century and was included in the Señorío de Santa Eufemia in 1293.

geography

The local area covers 67 km² and thus has a population density of 5.9 E / km². The place itself is at an altitude of 567 m above sea level and is 100 km away from the provincial capital Cordoba. The closest Pedroche in the south is about 9 km away. The place is surrounded by the typical olive groves and pastures with holm oaks . The archaeological site of Majadaiglesia is located on the outermost edge of the local area, 6 km northeast of the center on the land of the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Cruces . At a point where the Arroyo de Santa María and Arroyo del Figueral streams converge, the ruins are on a small hill. The Arroyo de la Matanza is the main stream in the town. The CO-7100 and the CO-6412 as well as the A3200 are the roads that connect the place with the outside world.

Attractions

The parish church of Santa Ana was built in the 16th century. It is very simple, has only a single ship, which is divided by five arches. This spatial concept makes it the most inviting church in the Los Pedroches area. The architect Hernán Ruiz III built this church. The facade is structured with strong buttresses that were designed by Hernán Ruiz el Joven . The church houses an interesting Mater Dolorosa from the 18th century.

The Ermita de la Virgen de las Cruces is right next to the most important archaeological site in the region. The place has probably also been a cult place for the most ancient times. The church was built in the 16th century. It is divided into three sections by tie-through arches that continue on the outside as pillars. The front side is extended by a choir with a stepped vault to which shells are attached. The main facade is characterized by a portico . The church has an early Christian baptistery in the sacristy, which also speaks for the old age of the church. The old town of El Soto is nearby .

Festivals

The religious festivals are especially celebrated in the place. These include: Candelaria ( Candlemas ) on February 2, Carnaval , Semana Santa , San Isidro (Feast of the local patron on May 15), Romería de la Virgen de las Cruces ( pilgrimage ), San Pedro on June 29, Fiesta de Santa Ana (July 25/26), Fiesta Chica de la Virgen (the Sunday after September 12th).
