Surname

Hinojosa del Duque was founded in its current form in the first decades of the 14th century. At that time, the Council of Cordoba (Concejo de Córdoba) operated in the Comarca de Los Pedroches settlement and the places were named after the local characteristics. According to the records of Ramírez y de las Casas-Deza, there was plenty of fennel (hinojo) in Hinojosa, which gave the place its original name: Finojosa del Pedroche (1316). The royal fiefdom of Hinojosa passed to the Condado de Belalcázar in the middle of the 15th century and was given the name that is still common today from 1533, since the Conde Francisco de Sotomayor acquired the title of Duque when he was Elvira de Zúñiga, III duquesa de Béjar got married.

history

Prehistory and Antiquity

There are quite a few finds that give an insight into the settlement history of Hinojosa del Duque. The oldest finds come from the Mesolithic . Stone tools have been found at Cerro del Cohete . A site with many finds from the Epipalaeolithic is in El Olivar de las Patudas . A number of microlithic tools have been found there: cutting tools, notches and burrs, as well as some discs and knife blades, as they are characteristic of these sites. Several polished stone axes, which have been excavated in various places in the local area, date from the Copper Age.

In addition, some fragments of painted ceramics from the Bronze Age have been preserved on Cerro del Cohete . According to Casas-Deza, Hinojosa del Duque is in what the Romans called “ Idias ”. Remains of Roman buildings have been found and the embankments of Roman roads 11 and 29 from the Itinerary of Antoninus , with which three streets of the city can be identified, which suggests that Hinojosa del Duque had a certain regional importance in this period. Remains of Roman settlement can be found, for example, in the Ermita de Santo Domingo . They are attributed to the ancient solia . Likewise, stone inscriptions can be found repeatedly mentioning " Baedro ", a town that, according to recent studies , is suspected to be in the area of El Viso . In the third century there was probably a larger Christian community because it is known that the elder Eutanasio was present at the Synod of Elvira and also signed the acts of the council, together with 24 other presbyters and bishops. At Cerro del Cohete to late Roman grave stones found and the Cerro del Molinillo one has found a horse's head made of cast lead. Mining was an important industry in Roman times. Copper mines were dug in La Almagrera and El Pozo de la Nieve and lead mines near Los Almadenes . At Baño de la Mora there were ore washes .

middle Ages

During the Moorish era, under the Emirate of Córdoba , Córdoba developed into the capital of the Muslim territories in Spain. The area around Hinojosa del Duque was known for its wealth of acorns and their quality. Accordingly, the area was called Fohs-al-Bolut or Fahs-al-Bolut (Spanish “Llano de las Bellotas”, English plane of the acorns).

According to some authors such as Ebn Alkhatib, Abu-Bakero, Masdeu or Juan Ruíz, the area of Hinojosa del Duque was also the seat of a typhoon . Between 1011 and 1106 five kings ruled (Hodail I, Abdalmelic I, Hodail II, Abdalmelic II and Yahya), making it the penultimate Taifa that was incorporated into the Almoravid Empire .

In 1236 it was conquered by Diego Martínez, who was led by Ferdinand III. (Castile) was enfeoffed with the area. The famous "serranillas" of the Marqués de Santillana , who sing about the "Vaquera de la Finojosa" (cowherdess of Finojosa), were inspired in this area. In 1444 it passed to the Condado de Belalcázar , as a gift from Juan II to Gutierre de Sotomayor . Since 1594 it belonged to the Tierra de Belalcázar in the Provincia de Trujillo .

Modern times

In modern times “Hinojosa” belonged to the county of Belalcázar and in 1533 it began to be called “del Duque”. In that year Francisco de Sotomayor, 5th Count of Belalcázar, contracted the marriage with Teresa de Zúñiga , 3rd Duchess of Béjar . The city then belonged to the diocese of Córdoba and the province of Extremadura at the same time until the 19th century .

Hinojosa del Duque has always been the county's most populous town and has seen rapid growth. The population increased from 711 (1530) to 1,408 in 1790.

19th century

Some of the most terrifying years in the city's history occurred in the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars . The first news of the conquest reached the community on April 7, 1808, when the courts asked for public intercession. In 1809 a battalion of shotgun-armed Hinojoseños was formed, who fought valiantly in the battles of Bailén , Medellín and Valsequillo and made numerous sacrifices. So-called "Escopeteros" (Guerrilleros nacionales), known as "los Mayas", were fighting against the French in the area of Los Pedroches . In 1833, the municipality of Hinojosa del Duque was administratively added to the province of Córdoba, but the connections with Extremadura still functioned until 1836.

The Spanish cholera epidemics (ciclos epidémicos del cólera, 1834 and 1855) also claimed casualties in the city, although the effects were less disastrous than in other cities. The Carlists of Caudillo Gómez did not enter in this period the city, probably because the city council convenient methods had created of self-protection.

Big changes took place at the beginning of the 19th century. The liquidation of the feudal regime and land distribution occurred under the government of María Cristina . Meanwhile, Hinojosa del Duque was incorporated into the Provincia de Córdoba , with which she had previously had no relationship. The expansion of the communication network and the improvement of the transport routes ensured that Hinojosa del Duque was able to expand its position and importance in the north of the province in the 20th century.

The five city gates were demolished between 1890 and 1902. San Sebastián , la Caridad , Belalcázar , San Gregorio and Torrecilla , they were all built in the Estilo plateresco . Three of these gates had already existed in 1581. King Alfonso XIII granted the city the title of Ciudad on August 5, 1927 , for "the increasing development of agriculture, industry and trade and its steadfast support for the monarchy".

The coat of arms was only recently officially recognized. It is quartered by a narrow golden cross. The frame of the pictures is also golden. The first and fourth quarters show a rising lion in gold on a red background. The second and third quarters show a silver dove on a blue background, viewed from the front with wings spread out. In the shield boss you can see seven seals arranged in three rows on a white background: 3, 1, 1. Gold tendrils surround the shield and above the shield there is a helmet with a feather ornament. The slogan "FORTES UT LEO SIMPLICES UT COLUMBAE" (German: strong as a lion and simple as a dove) is written on silver tape under the sign. The coat of arms has no particular reference to history.

Town twinning

Hinojosa del Duque has various partnerships with the support of the European Union :

economy

Hinojosa del Duque was under the rule of Charles III. one of the most important centers of wool production in Extremadura with a large sheep population. The city has been famous through the centuries for its richness in agricultural products and livestock. The cattle markets such as the Feria des San Isidro , which was permitted by a royal privilege of 1777, as well as the Feria des San Agustín , were groundbreaking on a national level in the 19th and in parts of the 20th century.

Hunting also plays a role for small game such as hares, rabbits, partridges, pigeons, quails and thrushes, and cereal and olive cultivation are also well developed. The olive cultivation is controlled by the cooperative SCA Olivarera "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" . There is also an old stone industry that is no longer just a craft. Today, modern techniques are used to work granite and marble, and ceramic production is a legacy from the time of the Arabs. Blacksmithing was also very important, some of which have produced products that are still in demand today.

The candy production is remarkable. There are characteristic perrunas hinojoseñas , sweets made from lard, eggs, sugar and flour. The local hams are also famous and there is a special variety of olives with the Hojiblanca Designation of Origin . In addition, there are fruit growing companies, metalworking trades and other branches of industry.

Attractions

Catedral de la Sierra

The parish church of Parroquia de San Juan Bautista is also known as the "Catedral de la Sierra" (Cathedral of the Mountains). It was declared a Monumento Nacional in 1981 . The majestic church from the 16th century shows different architectural styles. Major renovations were made in the 16th century. Hernán Ruiz, el Viejo was the builder of the Plateresque style. The work was completed by Hernán Ruiz, el Joven . The central nave is designed in the Mudejar style and has a unique coffered ceiling. The side aisles are covered with Gothic cross vaults and there is a baptistery in the Plateresk-Sitl. The tower is in Gothic style, it was completed at the end of the 16th century.

Parroquia de San Isidro Labrador

The parish church was established by the Diocese of Cordoba in 1890. Until then, the Church of St. Isidore of Madrid was the chapel of the hospital. The building has a barrel vault with lunettes . The dome over the crossing is decorated with abstract lines and the portal with granite pillars. The rectangular tower is made without decorations.

Ermita de Santa Ana (oldest church in the city)

Ermita de Santa Ana

The church is the prototype of the "Iglesia serrana de la Mesta" in neo-Gothic style. It is the oldest parish church in the city. It is said that it granted protection to Alfonso VIII as early as 1212 when he held a thanksgiving service a few days after the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa . The hermitage is located in the middle of the city center. It was probably built with the help of donations from the passing shepherds.

The monastery is one of the many religious foundations established by the Sotomayor family of counts. In a brief of September 15, 1573, Gregory XIII. that "the two nunneries of the town of Hinojosa des Duque, belonging to the county of Belalcázar, one of which is dedicated to the Adoration of the Mother of God and the other to Conception, unite and form a community in the monastery owned by the noble Lord Don Luis de Sotomayor founded. " The church was consecrated on April 28, 1693. The church is a graceful building with spectacular buttresses on the facade, into which two portals open. The older one is flanked by slender columns. The coats of arms of the Sotomayor and the Zúñiga are placed in the frieze. Also noteworthy is the large patio with a width of 27 m and a vault on granite columns.

Ermita de la Virgen del Castillo

The monastery is located in the Plaza de la Catedral , the main square of the municipality. Ramírez de las Casas Deza writes: "The name of this picture was taken from the castle that stood there and has since been destroyed." In his work on the history of the city, Father Juan Ruiz also assumes that there was a castle or a tower at the place where the church now stands. However, there are no further indications for this. The church dates from the 15th century. It served as a private church or chapel of a small monastery. The single-nave building is built in the Gothic style. The beautiful baroque chapel (camarín) dates from the 17th century. The most important element of the Ermita, however, is the beautifully designed apse , which is especially visible from the outside.

Ermita de San Sebastian

The hermitage is the greatest example of an "Iglesia serrana cubierta" in the province. It was in the Catálogo Artístico y Monumental de la Provincia de Córdoba by Ortíz Juárez & al. described. It is 23 m long and 10 m wide. Seven arches span the single-nave building. It should be as old as the Ermita de Santa Ana.

Detailed view of the Ermita de San Isidro Labrador

Ermita de San Isidro Labrador

The hermitage is located in the street of the same name. Juan Ruiz writes: "This hermitage has a beautiful baroque rotunda ; on September 12, 1739, a group of peasants from the city undertook to build an hermitage for San Isidro from their own funds through a public tender." The chapel has a circular floor plan and a dome with six light openings. It was consecrated on April 5, 1753.

Ermita de San Gregorio

In the chapter files from 1581 there is a reference that for the patron and advocate (Abogado) of the peasants of this city, San Gregorio, a chapel was built at the exit of the city, on the way to Cordoba. The simple hermitage was expanded and stood at the point where the sanctuary of the Convento de San Diego (Iglesia de los Padres Carmelitas) is located today. Today's Ermita was built on the road to Seville in the 17th century and was first run as a parish church in 1735. The ship is 12 m long and 4.4 m wide. Compared to the other churches in the city, it is the most modern.

Ermita de San Benito

The hermitage is near Gutierra , after crossing the Arroyo del Cohete , on the opposite side of the Cerro del Conjuro (Wizard's Hill ), an area in which remains of Roman settlement can be found everywhere. It was built in the 14th century and its interior is a good example of the dynamic that the Gothic was developing in this region. The Ermita is mentioned by Alfonso XI in his "Libro de Monterías". At the beginning of the 14th century it was the center of a settlement. It was related to the former village that stood on what is now called “la Gutierra”. The single-nave church is covered with a cross vault and arches made of brick, which are roofed with a wooden-covered gable.

Convento de San Diego

In the "Historia de la Provincia" of Ángeles it is reported in 1589 that a monastery was built by the Franciscans , who should take care of the spiritual needs of the inhabitants of Hinjosa del Duque. This community existed for 244 years. After that, from 1890, Carmelites moved into the monastery, which made many changes over the years. The monastery was only recently demolished. It was a grand building with wide corridors and large classrooms and halls and served as a college and seminar for boys from the comarca. The church is a work from the 16th century. Reconstruction work ended in the Spanish Civil War in 1936–39.

Dild des Cristo de las Injurias (Castillo Lastrucci, 1942) and the Virgen de los Dolores

Ermita del Santo Cristo de las Injurias

The hermitage of the "Christ of Injuries" was set up in a church that had been dedicated to Santa Brígida for centuries . The current name goes back to the end of the 18th century. The church is on a hill that overlooks the whole city. The miraculous image of the "Cristo de las Injurias" enjoys great veneration. The church is in the neoclassical style. The ship with five subdivisions is covered by a barrel vault. Renovations were carried out in the 1940s, emphasizing the simplicity of the church.

Ermita de San Bartolomé

The hermitage is located in "los Almadenes" and is surrounded by the remains of old mines. This underlines the simple execution and the old age of the church. The single-nave church is covered by four arches. It has a wooden roof with brackets. A portico was added to the old facade. At the beginning of the 21st century the church was restored by the "Escuela-Taller Las Ermitas de Hinojosa".

In 2008 the church was used as a location for some scenes from the film "El Libro de las Aguas" (based on the novel of the same name by Alejandro López Andrada , produced by Antonio Giménez-Rico ).

Side view of the Ermita de Ntra Sra de la Antigua

Ermita-Santuario de la Virgen de La Antigua. Patrona de Hinojosa del Duque

The hermitage is one of the most revered sanctuaries and one of the most beautiful places in the Valle de los Pedroches. The original buildings date from the 13th and 14th centuries. They were rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War. The single-nave church is covered by four arches, as is typical of this type of church. The ceiling is a baroque vault. Instead of windows, the church has round "óculos" (eyes) that let in light. Outer buttresses correspond to the arches inside.

Ermita de Santo Domingo

A monument of exceptional historical value, the silhouette of this hermitage dominates the plains around Hinojosa del Duque. It is located in the Dehesa de los Palomares . For centuries it was the meeting place of the respective councils of the parishes in Los Pedroches (Cabildos de los Pueblos del Valle de Los Pedroches), who discussed the distribution of pastures, borders and other public matters there. The buildings date from the beginning of the 14th century. The construction is functional with pointed arches. The ceiling is a simple coffered ceiling . The gate on the Gospel side (north) is Gothic and decorated with a flat lintel.

Fountain "El Pilar de los Llanos" in the Real Cañada de la Mesta

Fuente del Pilar de los Llanos

The Plateresque style monument was erected in the 16th century. The fountain is on the outskirts, at one of the former rest areas of the Cañada Real Soriana . For centuries it served as a water point for the flocks passing through and as a venue for the Ferias de San Agustín . When the water dried up in 1579, the community agreed to use the noria of a nearby orchard to bring water to the "Pilar".

Sports

The city has two sports centers with soccer fields, indoor swimming pool, tennis courts and gymnastics rooms ( Campo Municipal de Deportes Ntra Sra del Carmen and Polideportivo Municipal Ciudad de Hinojosa del Duque ) and has three sports clubs:

  • Club Deportivo Hinojosa del Duque (Soccer)
  • Club de Baloncesto Hinojosa del Duque (football)

Hinojosa in literature

The bucolic verses "La Vaquera de la Finojosa", written by Iñigo López de Mendoza in the first third of the 15th century, served centuries later the playwright Francisco Benítez in 1998 as a model for a folk play that is performed every four years in Hinojosa. The performance takes place in the Plaza de la Catedral and is presented by more than 200 amateur actors. The plot revolves around the amorous adventures of the Marqués de Santillana. (There are similar events with "Fuente Ovejuna" by Lope de Vega and "El Halcón y la Columna" in Belalcázar , both by Benítez).

"

Moça tan fermosa
non vi en la frontera
como la vaquera
de la Finojosa ...
Faziendo la via
del Calatraveño
a Santa María,
vencido del sueño,
perdi la carrera
do vi la vaquera
de la Finojosa ... "
- Fragment of the Serranilla La Vaquera de la Finojosa by the Marqués de Santillana.

In 1854 Luis de Eguílaz wrote the work "La Vaquera de la Finojosa" based on historical events, which was inspired by the same poem. The missionary Francisco Hilarión Sánchez Carracedo (Padre Hilarión) writes from Venezuela about the distant homeland in his books "Una Mujer Esclava del Hogar. La Hermana" and " Liras Hermanas. Obras Poéticas Portuguesas y Españolas" .

Hinojosa del Duque appears in some other works, such as in two books by Rafael Canalejo Cantero (winner of the popular TV show "Un millón para el mejor" 1968): La Comendadora and En Belmez hay niebla esta mañana (Today Mogen Nebel in Belmez ), or in the book De la luz y el granito: Himnos a Hinojosa del Duque . "and there are always echoes of contemporary poets such as Leopoldo de Luis , Carlos Clementson , Domingo F. Faílde , Antonio Rodríguez Jiménez , Fernando de Villena , Alejandro López Andrada and Antonio Garrido Moraga . Local poets are Sabina Tamaral and Juan Cano Cabanillas ;. Also the winner of the Premio Adonais 2001 José Antonio Gómez-Coronado Vinuesa is a descendant of Hinojosenos.
