history

Archaeological finds in the numerous caves in the surrounding karst mountains show that the region around Cabra was already settled in the Middle Paleolithic . Examples of these finds can be seen in the city's Archaeological Museum, including scrapers, chisels, and other Stone Age tools. The Romans called Cabra Igabrum or Licabrum , which developed into a wealthy, fortified city of importance. Many residents received Roman citizenship . Under the rule of the Visigoths in the 3rd century AD, the city became a bishopric with the construction of the Church of San Juan Bautista . At that time, Cabra was the largest and most important town in the southern province of Cordoba. After the conquest of Spain by the Moors in the 8th century, the city was called Qabr and became the capital of a Muslim province. In the 11th century, the legendary battle of Cabra between Seville under El Cid and Granada under Count García Ordóñez took place nearby , which Seville won. During the Reconquista , Cabra changed hands several times until the Moors were finally expelled from Spain in early 1492. In 1344 King Alfonso XI founded of Castile the rule of Cabra to Doña Leonor de Guzzman, mother of King Henry II of Castile. Afterwards Cabra belonged to different lords as well as the crown. In 1455, Don Diego Fernandez de Córdoba received the title of Count of Cabra from King Henry IV .

Sanctuary of the Ermita de la Virgen de la Sierra

In the 17th century, Don Luis de Aguilar donated his fortune to the Foundation of the Colegio de la Purísima Concepción (School of the Immaculate Conception). The reputation of this school went far beyond the provincial borders, so that students from all over Spain came to Cabra. Today the school is called IES Aguilar y Eslava .

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) Cabra was bombed by Republican aircraft on November 7, 1938. According to official information, there were 107 dead and more than 200 injured.

Attractions

Cabra is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards and is dominated by a Moorish castle whose origins go back to Roman times . In the late Middle Ages the place became the seat of the Counts of Cabra and is now home to the IES Aguilar y Eslava Catholic school . The baroque church Iglesia de la Asunción was built on the site of a former mosque . In the old town there is one of the oldest churches in Spain, the Iglesia San Juan Bautista , which dates back to the early days of Christianity in Spain . Cabra has a bullring. The pilgrimage church Ermita de la Virgen de la Sierra is located about 13 km northeast of the city at an altitude of 1,217 m .

economy

The main economic factor is the cultivation of olives and wine in monocultures , which take up about 85% of the agricultural area. 45% of the population are employed in the production of olive oil and wine, 30% work in industry and the rest in the service sector . However, there is a high unemployment rate that can occasionally reach 31.5% outside of the harvest season. Cabra is the natural gateway to the Sierras Subbéticas Geopark, so tourism is becoming increasingly important for the service sector.
