Josef Vančura

Josef Vančura (born February 21, 1870 in Lišov , † May 26, 1930 in Mariánské Lázně ) was a Czech legal historian and papyrologist .

In 1893 he received his doctorate from Charles University in Prague and completed his habilitation in 1898 . From 1909 he was professor of Roman law at Prague University. He is considered the founder of papyrology in the Czech Republic. From 1925 he was a member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 1926/1927 he was the rector of the university.

Vančura was a passionate chess player and composer all his life. His son of the same name, Josef Vančura (1898–1921), who was known for his chess compositions ( studies ), came from his marriage to Matilda Vančura .
