Founding decree of the emperor

The Czech Academy of Sciences, Spoken Word and Art ( Česká akademie císaře Františka Josefa pro vědy, slovesnost a umění ), founded by Emperor Franz Joseph on January 23, 1890 , which was incorporated into the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts (Czech Česká akademie věd a umění , abbreviated to ČAVU), brought together the most famous scientists, architects, writers, composers and visual artists in its ranks. Her successor became the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1952 through the merger with the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences , after some departments had previously been spun off and established as independent institutes.

The founding of the learned society was the result of long-term efforts by some protagonists from the Bohemian state parliament, led by Josef Hlávka , who became the first president of the academy and from then on supported it with generous donations. The academy set itself the task of disseminating the sciences and the arts, especially taking into account the Czech language and the development of Czech sources, preferably in the field of word art.

The academy was originally divided into four so-called classes:

I. Philosophy, political, legal and social sciences, history and archeology
II. Mathematics, natural sciences, medicine and geography
III. philology
IV. Literature, fine arts, music

The presidents (or chairmen) of the academy:

  1. Josef Hlávka (Chairman) July 12, 1890 - March 11, 1908
  2. Antonín Randa (Chairman) July 3, 1908 - October 6, 1914
  3. Karel Vrba (Chairman) October 24, 1914 - December 7, 1922
  4. Josef Zubatý (President) January 16, 1923 - March 21, 1931
  5. Josef Bohuslav Foerster (President) May 5, 1931 - January 25, 1939
  6. Josef Šusta (President) January 25, 1939 - May 27, 1945
  7. Zdeněk Nejedlý (President) July 3, 1945 - 1952
