Bujalance is a municipality , Spanish municipio , in the Andalusian province of Córdoba , in the Comarca Alto Guadalquivir in the midst of extensive olive fields .

The name comes from Arabic برج حَنَش, DMG Burǧ al-Ḥanaš , 'Adder Tower'. In Latin and Castilian sources of the 13th century , the -r- from burǧ , which is originally related to the Germanic castle via the Latin burgus , is still preserved: "Burialhanc" or "Burjalhance".

Bujalance Castle from the 10th century is a typical example of Californian defense architecture.

The artist Antonio Palomino , author of art theoretical writings and designer of numerous sacred works of art and painter of church frescoes , was born in Bujalance in 1653 , where he spent the first ten years of his life.
