Abraham Poincheval

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abraham Poincheval (born 1972 in Alençon ) is a French performance artist . He grew up in Mayenne and studied at the art schools in Le Mans and Nantes . He lives in Marseille today . Abraham Poincheval expands his physical and mental limits in his unusual performances. The experience of being locked in, immobile or sensory impairment is for him a means of exploring the world and human nature.

Actions

In 2014, Poincheval spent thirteen days at the Paris Hunting and Nature Museum , sewn inside a stuffed bear, to explore the connection to the ancestors and the animal world. The supply was based on the eating habits of a bear. Mushrooms, grains, insects and fish were dried and packed in plastic bags and given to the artist.

In another campaign, at the end of July 2015, he drifted down the Rhône in a message in a bottle . The route started in Switzerland and ended in Lyon. Inside the 6 meter long and 2 meter wide glass bottle, temperatures of up to 50 degrees were sometimes found. During the several months' journey, the artist repeatedly made stops to show the population his project and to establish contact. In Villeurbanne , a base camp was set up at the IAC center d'art contemporain , from where conversations via Skype were possible. Both the bear and the glass bottle can be viewed in the museum.

On February 22, 2017, Poincheval had himself locked inside a twelve-ton limestone boulder in the Palais de Tokyo Museum , Paris, for a period of eight days . The experiment ended according to plan on March 1, 2017. As a motive for the action, Poincheval names the desire to explore the mineral world and to experience how far one can change oneself.

As of March 29, 2017, Poincheval hatched about a dozen chicken eggs for 21 to 26 days in the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Here he sat wrapped in a blanket, in a plexiglass box on a kind of incubator. There was a lamp above the chair. A few books were used for diversion. The action was over when all the chicks had hatched. After hatching, the chicks were taken to a farm in Normandy. The artist sees the particular difficulty of the action in the fact that during this performance he can be directly observed by the audience for the first time.

On June 2, 2018, Poincheval was locked up for a week in the Museum of Aurignac in a 3.20 m high statue made of larch wood, which is modeled on a famous Paleolithic statue. It is the first known anthropomorphic statue designed as a human-lion. It is 32 cm small and made from a mammoth tusk .
