Acisclo Antonio Palomino de Castro y Velasco (* 1653 in Bujalance , Province of Córdoba , † April 13, 1726 in Madrid ) was a Spanish painter of religious baroque images of the outgoing Siglo de Oro , as well as an art writer.

Life

Palomino came from a wealthy family who moved to Cordoba when he was ten years old. There he later studied theology , philosophy and law . He also took painting lessons from Juan de Valdés Leal in 1672 and from Juan de Alfaro y Gómez in 1675 . First he copied pictures by the painter Antonio del Castillo . In 1678 he was called to Madrid as a subdeacon and married shortly afterwards. Here he made the acquaintance of Claudio Coello and Juan Carreño de Miranda and painted several frescoes . In 1688 he became the royal court painter to Charles II and was strongly influenced by Luca Giordano in his work . From 1697 he went to Valencia for three or four years and painted several frescoes, including in the Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados and the local Iglesia de los Santos Juanes . Between 1705 and 1715 he painted further frescoes in Salamanca , Granada and Córdoba, then in Madrid. After the death of his wife, he was ordained a priest in 1725 and died a short time later.

Between 1715 and 1724, Palomino wrote his three-volume work El museo pictórico y escala óptica , the third volume of which, with a collection of 226 biographies on important Spanish artists in the 16th and 17th centuries, is given particular importance by art historians.
