Antoninian of Saloninus as Augustus

Publius Licinius Cornelius Saloninus Valerianus (* around 242; † 260 in Cologne ) was a Roman emperor in 260.

Life

Saloninus was born around the year 242. His father was the future Emperor Gallienus , who himself came from a respected family, his mother Cornelia Salonina . After the death of his older brother Valerianus Caesar in 258, Gallienus appointed him Caesar (lower emperor). Saloninus was then sent to Gaul to protect the Rhine border . During this time Saloninus resided in Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium , today's Cologne . He was assisted by a consultant whose name has been passed down as Silvanus or Albanus.

In the late summer of 260 Saloninus and Silvanus / Albanus had to deal with the usurper Postumus , who after a victory over Germanic tribes had probably demanded a larger share of the booty. Postumus then advanced on Cologne and besieged the city. Saloninus was proclaimed Augustus , but eventually handed over to Postumus together with Silvanus and executed shortly afterwards. Postumus himself then established the so-called Gallic Sonderreich , which lasted until 274. Gallienus, who was tied to the Danube border , could not intervene (see Imperial Crisis of the 3rd Century ).
