Udo Hartmann

Udo Hartmann (born February 23, 1970 ) is a German ancient historian .

Life, career, research

Udo Hartmann studied history and philosophy at the University of Leipzig and the Free University of Berlin from 1990 to 1997 . In 2000 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on The Palmyrenian Partial Kingdom . In 1998/99 Hartmann held his first teaching positions at the Free University of Berlin. From 1998 to 2001 he worked for Alexander Demandt in his project on late antiquity . From 2001 to 2007 Hartmann was a research assistant and temporarily lecturer at the chair for ancient history at the Humboldt University in Berlin , from 2007 to 2008 he was a lecturer for special tasks at the chair for ancient history at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . In the 2007/2008 winter semester he was a substitute for the assistant for ancient history at the Technical University of Dresden , in 2010 he was a teacher for special tasks in ancient history at the Historical Institute of the Ruhr University in Bochum , and from 2010 to 2011 he was a project member in ancient history of the University of Kiel. Since June 2001 he has also been the review editor for ancient history at H-Soz-Kult . Since the summer semester 2011, Hartmann has been a permanent research assistant at the Chair of Ancient History at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena . In May 2016 he completed his habilitation there with a thesis on the philosophers' lives of late antiquity and has been a private lecturer ever since .

One of Hartmann's main areas of research is the encounter between oriental and occidental cultures in the Middle East, with a particular focus on the Arsacids and early Sassanids . In addition to scientists such as Andreas Luther , Andreas Mehl , Henning Börm , Hilmar Klinkott , Robert Rollinger and Monika Schuol, he is a member of the interdisciplinary working group Orient and Occident , founded by Josef Wiesehöfer in 1999 , which deals specifically with these topics. His dissertation also appeared in the Oriens et Occidens series associated with the working group .
