Andreas Mehl
Andreas Mehl (born August 16, 1945 in Tangermünde ) is a German ancient historian .
Andreas Mehl spent most of his childhood in Heidelberg. There he passed the Abitur in 1966. He first studied physics and mathematics, but soon Latin, Greek and history at the universities of Giessen and Rome . In 1972 he was in Giessen on the subject of Tacitus about Emperor Claudius . The events at court. PhD. He then worked as a research assistant, first for Classical Philology and then for Ancient History in Giessen and Stuttgart .
His habilitation took place in 1983 at the University of Stuttgart in ancient history on the subject of Seleukos Nikator and his empire. Part I: Seleucus' life and the development of his position of power . In 1985 he became professor of ancient history at the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Education (today: University of Koblenz-Landau ) in Landau. From 1985 to 1989 he taught as a professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt . He then worked from 1989 to 1992 as a professor of ancient history at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . There the focus was on ancient Cyprus. From 1992 until his retirement in 2011 he was Professor of Ancient History at the University of Halle .
His research interests are democratic Athens, Hellenism with a focus on the Seleucid Empire and Cyprus, the Roman Empire, Roman historiography, society, economy and technology (Greek and Roman), cultural history, cultural ethology, mentalities and the history of research into antiquity.
