Ernst von Stern (born June 25, 1859 at Gut Seyershof ( Livonia ), † April 27, 1924 in Halle ) was a German-Russian ancient historian and classical philology .

Ernst von Stern came from the Baltic German nobility and was the son of a landowner. In 1877 he graduated from the Dorpater grammar school and then studied classical philology and archeology at the Dorpater and Leipzig universities . In 1883 the master's degree took place. In 1884 he received his doctorate at the University of Dorpat with the thesis Catiline and the party struggles in Rome from 66-63 . In 1884 he also completed his habilitation at the University of Odessa . There he had been a private lecturer since 1884, in 1886 he became an associate professor and in 1888 a full professor of classical philology. 1900/01 he taught at Moscow University . From 1896 to 1911 Stern was a full professor at the University of Odessa and director of the museum of the Imperial Society for History and Antiquities there. At the beginning of the 20th century he carried out excavations in the Ionian colony on the island of Berezan , where he a. a. found the Beresan runestone . In addition, he headed the women's college in Odessa from 1908 to 1911. In addition, Stern was honorary curator of the St. Pauli Realschule in Odessa from 1908 to 1911. In 1906 he was appointed to the Imperial Council of State by Nicholas II and received larger funds for research.

Despite numerous high Russian awards, he accepted a call to the University of Halle in 1911 ; he had refused a first call in 1906. From 1921 Stern was a representative of the University of Halle in the emergency community of German science . In 1921/22 and 1923/24 he was rector of the university. Stern published on both Roman and Greek history.
