Stefan Pfeiffer (ancient historian)

Stefan Pfeiffer (born July 30, 1974 in Aachen ) is a German ancient historian .

After graduating from high school in 1994 and completing community service in 1994/95, Pfeiffer began studying Egyptology , Catholic theology , history , classical archeology and papyrology at the University of Trier in 1995 . During his studies he took part in excavations in Qantir (Egypt) and Tavium (Turkey). In 2001 he completed his Magister Artium , and in 2002 he passed the first state examination for teaching at upper secondary level for history and Catholic theology. This was followed by a substitute for an assistant position for Egyptology at the University of Trier. Between 2001 and 2004 Pfeiffer also worked on the project Bibliography of Secondary Literature on Temple Texts of the Greco-Roman Period , since 2002 on the sub-project A 1 The Origin and Development of a Multicultural Society in Greco-Roman Egypt of the Collaborative Research Center 600 of the German Research Foundation . In 2004 he received his doctorate in Trier with the thesis The Decree of Kanopos (238 BC). Commentary and historical evaluation of a trilingual synodal decree of the Egyptian priests in honor of Ptolemy III. and his family .

In Trier in 2007 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the veneration of the emperors and the cult of the emperors in Alexandria and Egypt from Augustus to Caracalla . From February 2008 to July 2009 he was a research assistant at the University of Mannheim . Between August 2009 and September 2010 he was an academic advisor at the University of Münster . From April to September 2010 he was a substitute for the professorship for Antiquity and Europe at the Technical University of Chemnitz . From October 2010 to 2013 he taught there as a professor for antiquity and Europe. On May 16, 2012 he was elected dean of the Chemnitz Faculty of Philosophy for a term of almost two years . Pfeiffer has been W3 Professor for Ancient History at the University of Halle since April 2013 .

Pfeiffer is primarily concerned with the religious history of Egypt in Greco-Roman times, the social and economic history of Hellenism , ancient Judaism , the imperial cult in the Roman Empire and the early Roman Empire . In 2009, 30 years after Hermann Bengtson's presentation in German-speaking countries, Pfeiffer published a monographic treatment of Roman history from the years 69 to 96, the epoch of the Flavian dynasty . In 2017 he published an overview of the history of the Ptolemies .
