A viaduct on the Route des Tamarins near Saint-Paul

The Route des Tamarins (road of the tamarinds ) is a six-lane 34-kilometer expressway opened on June 23, 2009 on the French island of Réunion ( overseas department ) , located in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar . The expressway is intended to relieve national road 1 by connecting Saint-Paul and L'Étang-Salé over the heights of the west coast.

The construction of the road was considered a challenge because 120 deep gorges and crevices had to be overcome on the route. In addition, the structures have to withstand wind speeds of up to 240 km / h, which can occur there with tropical cyclones . The 45 meter high supporting pillars of a viaduct had to be anchored 33 meters in the ground. One of the bridges is the 375 meter long and up to 50 meter high Trois-Bassins viaduct near the holiday resort of Saint-Leu .

The construction costs of the project, which began in 2003, are estimated at 970 million euros and will be borne by France, the department and the European Union. Part of the construction contract was awarded to the French subsidiary Razel of the German Bilfinger Berger Ingenieurbau , which has since been sold to Fayat .
