Hans-Ulrich Wiemer
Hans-Ulrich Wiemer (born July 31, 1961 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German ancient historian .
Hans-Ulrich Wiemer studied Latin , Greek and educational sciences from 1981 to 1988 and from 1984 to 1990 history at the University of Marburg . In 1988 he took the first state examination in Latin, Greek and educational sciences, and in 1990 the extension examination for history. From 1991 to 1993 he worked on his doctorate with the support of the German National Academic Foundation . In 1992/1993 he spent an academic year at Queen's College , Oxford . The doctorate took place in February 1994, subject of the dissertation was Libanios and Julian. Studies on the relationship between rhetoric and politics in the fourth century AD
From 1994 to 2000 Wiemer was first a research assistant and then assistant to Robert Malcolm Errington at the Seminar for Ancient History in Marburg. The habilitation took place in July 2000. The work was in two parts, Rhodian Traditions in Hellenistic Historiography and War, Trade and Piracy. Studies on the history of Hellenistic Rhodes printed. In 2001 he was appointed university lecturer and remained in this position in Marburg until 2004. From 2004 to 2006 he worked as a research assistant in the Asia Minor project of Christian Marek's chair at the University of Zurich. In 2006 he was appointed to a W2 professorship for Ancient History at the University of Giessen . Wiemer spent the 2008/09 academic year as a Gerda Henkel Fellow at Brown University in Providence . Since 2010 he has held the chair for Ancient History at the University of Erlangen , since 2012 a full member of the German Archaeological Institute and a member of the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy . Wiemer spent 2015/16 as a Senior Fellow at the Historisches Kolleg in Munich.
Wiemer works primarily in the field of Hellenism and late antiquity and has led research projects on the Hellenistic Priene (2008–2012) and on “Gothic warrior groups in the late Roman Empire” (2009–2015). In his research, he addresses questions of political history as well as those of social and cultural history. Another focus is on ancient and modern historiography.
