Adolf Schulten
Ernst Adolf Schulten (born May 27, 1870 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ), † March 19, 1960 in Erlangen ) was a German ancient historian and archaeologist .
Life
The son of a factory owner studied history and archeology at the universities of Bonn and Göttingen from 1888 after attending grammar school in his home town of Elberfeld . There he received his doctorate in 1892 under Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff . With the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute , he traveled through Italy, Africa and Greece in 1894. In 1896 Schulten completed his habilitation in Göttingen and in 1907 was appointed associate professor for ancient history at the University of Erlangen . In 1909 he became a full professor and in 1935 he retired. From 1943 to 1946 he lived in Spain.
Since his travel grant, Schulten has focused on the ancient history and archeology of Italy, North Africa and, since 1902, especially Spain . He is considered an important figure in the history of Spanish archeology. His work on the Celtiberian city of Numantia is still considered fundamental today.
From 1905 to 1912 Schulten led excavations in Numantia and the nearby Roman camps . In 1924 he unsuccessfully searched for the position of the legendary city of Tartessos , which he regarded as identical to Plato's Atlantis . From 1948 he worked in the ruins of Tarraco and in the towns of Mainake , Munda and Segesta . Outside Spain, he carried out excavations in Masada on the Dead Sea in 1932 .
In recognition of his work, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Barcelona in 1940 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Alfonso X. ' from the Spanish state, in 1952 the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 1959 the Bavarian Order of Merit . He was a member of the German and Austrian Archaeological Institute as well as several scientific academies.
