Franz Maximilian Groedel

Franz Maximilian Groedel (born May 23, 1881 in Bad Nauheim , † October 12, 1951 in New York ) was a German cardiologist who emigrated to the USA .

Life

His father was Isidor Maximilian Groedel (also: Isidor Mayer Groedel; 1850-1921). He was considered a pioneer of balneology and cardiology and was an honorary citizen of the city of Bad Nauheim. He was also the doctor of the last German Empress .

Franz Maximilian Groedel studied in Munich, Giessen and Leipzig. During his studies he became a member of the Alemannia Gießen fraternity (1901) and the Cimbria Munich fraternity . He did his doctorate in Leipzig . In 1909 he developed X-ray cinematography. His habilitation took place in Frankfurt am Main in 1919. In 1925 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

He founded the Kerckhoff Institute in Bad Nauheim and became its first director in 1931. In 1951 the Max Planck Society took over. The current name is Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research .

After the “ seizure of power ” in 1933 he was forced to emigrate to the USA because of his Jewish descent. He was the founder of the American College of Cardiology . His fields of work were radiology and cardiology.

His urn was buried in the family crypt in the general cemetery in Bad Nauheim.

In memory of Groedel, the German Cardiac Society awards the Franz Groedel Medal from 1955 .
