Herbert Peiper
Herbert Peiper (born November 1, 1890 in Greifswald , † September 1, 1952 in Sankt Goar ) was a German surgeon and university professor.
Life
Peiper was the son of Erich Peiper and Anna Schirmer , the daughter of Rudolf Schirmer . After graduating from high school (1909) he studied medicine at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (1912) and the Royal University of Greifswald (1913). On February 14, 1914 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . When the First World War broke out , he was drafted into the German Army on August 2, 1914 . After the end of the war, he began his surgical training in 1919 with Victor Schmieden at the Friedrichs University in Halle . With Schmieden he moved to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1920 . In 1922/23 studies followed in the United States, among others with George Washington Crile and Harvey Cushing . As the founder of myelography , he completed his habilitation in 1925. In 1930 he was appointed associate professor for surgery. In 1933 he received a teaching position for trauma medicine and accident assessment.
From 1934 he was director of the second and later the first surgical department of the Berlin-Charlottenburg City Hospital (Westend Hospital). At the same time, he took on an associate professorship at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin . After the beginning of the Second World War , Peiper was drafted and worked as a consulting surgeon. After all, as chief physician and senior physician, he was responsible for the entire care of the army's brain and spinal cord injuries . He received the War Merit Cross 1st Class, among other things, for the introduction of his "sponge tamponade", which drastically reduced the very high mortality rate from infected brain shots. The so-called vacuum therapy , which is used today in the treatment of problem wounds, ultimately goes back to these investigations . After the war, in 1946, in addition to an inquiry to take over the position of chief physician in Lübeck, he was offered the chair of surgery at the re-established Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . Not yet 62 years old, he died in Sankt Goar.
Peiper was married on June 23, 1923 to Erika Diener , who was born on July 16, 1896 in Pforzheim and came from an old merchant family. He had four children with her: Hans-Jürgen Peiper , Birgit Peiper married. Countess Finck von Finckenstein , Ulf Peiper and Gabriele Peiper married. Drove.
