Erich Peiper (born May 19, 1856 in Leubus Monastery ; † September 13, 1938 in Greifswald ) was a German pediatrician .

Life

Erich Peiper was the son of Pastor Georg Peiper. He attended high school in Liegnitz / Silesia and then studied medicine in Greifswald . After doctorate in 1881 and habilitation in 1884 with Hugo Pernice , Erich Peiper became associate professor in 1891 and five years later director of the Medical Polyclinic in Greifswald; In 1908 he was finally director of the Greifswald University Children's Clinic. In 1913 he was appointed a secret medical councilor and in 1921 a full professor at the children's clinic. He was married to Anna Schirmer (1867–1955), the daughter of the Greifswald ophthalmologist and professor of ophthalmology Rudolf Schirmer . His sons Albrecht Peiper , Herbert Peiper and Ulrich Peiper (pediatrician) also became physicians.

Peiper did research in the fields of vaccinations, parasitology and infant hygiene. Through his work, infant mortality in the Western Pomerania area could be reduced significantly. In 1913 he inaugurated the new building for the children's clinic in Greifswald. He built up modern paediatrics at the University of Greifswald.

In 1926 Erich Peiper was made an honorary citizen of the city of Greifswald.
