Albrecht Peiper (born October 23, 1889 in Greifswald , † October 7, 1968 in Leipzig ) was a German pediatrician .

Life

Albrecht Peiper was a son of the dermatologist , pediatrician pioneer and director of the University Children's Hospital Greifswald Erich Peiper (1856–1938). He studied in Greifswald , Freiburg i. Br. And Munich Medicine. After receiving his doctorate in 1914 and participating in the First World War, Albrecht Peiper received his pediatric training at the children's clinic at the University of Berlin , completed his habilitation in 1924 and then worked as a senior physician at this clinic. In 1937 he joined the NSDAP . In 1943 he became the holder of the chair for paediatrics at the University of Greifswald and deputy director of the university children's clinic. After the end of the Second World War, from 1946 he was initially a research assistant at the University Children's Hospital in Greifswald and a practicing pediatrician in Greifswald. From 1948 to 1958 he was full professor of paediatrics at the University of Leipzig and director of the university children's clinic.

Services

Peiper's scientific work deals primarily with three subject areas: the development of the child's brain activity , the physiology and pathology of breathing in normal and premature infants, and the history of paediatrics . He was a member of numerous professional associations and received numerous awards, including the National Prize III. Class (1953) and the titles Honored Physician of the People (1952), Honored Scientist of the People (1963) and Outstanding Scientist of the People (1964). In 1955 he was elected a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin . In the same year he was accepted as a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . In 1943 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He was an honorary doctor of the University of Leipzig. Peiper made great contributions to the reduction of infant mortality and the development of neonatology in the GDR and is considered one of the pioneers of neuropediatrics .
